Standardized Patients
At the University of Minnesota, standardized patients contribute to the training and evaluation of health care professionals in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and other programs. A standardized patient (SP) is a person who has been coached to accurately and consistently recreate the history, personality, physical findings, and emotional state of an actual patient. Standardized patients provide a very valuable opportunity for health sciences students to practice clinical skills in an environment that is both safe and supportive to the learning process. By practicing their skills with standardized patients, students have the opportunity to develop and refine their interpersonal skills and professionalism—essential skills in delivering health care today.
